Operation: Akbayan
by Athena M. Lopez The Biyaya Association of St. Christopher Parish, now on its eight years of existence as a non-profit organization, continues its active participation in the Parishs activities. One of Biyayas main goals and objectives since its formation in 1990 is the members humanitarian involvement in the Philippines by supporting the less fortunate among our people. For this year, under the leadership of Ruben and Miles Dumapit, we have launched our Operation: Akbayan and have chosen to answer the needs of Lucban, Quezon. Lucban is a hilly town situated 4 miles northward from the coastal location of Tayabas in Quezon Province in the Luzon region. Mt. Banahaw, the mystical mountain, looms nearby and chills the climate \of this tropical old town especially during the months of December to February. We collected good used clothes, sweaters and thermal wears for our needy "kababayans" particularly the senior citizens of the town who are in dire need of warm clothing. For this project we worked hand in hand with the Philippine National Red Cross, Quezon-Lucena City Chapter and its chairperson, Mrs.PresingT. Baldovino, who acted on the distribution of the donations. As we pursue and seek other humanitarian causes within the Philippines, we enjoin our fellow parishioners to heed our call and get involved. To those who already have helped, we are most grateful and we thank you sincerely for your kindness and generosity. |
